Khawaja's fitness in doubt following difficult Gabba net session
Under-fire Test opener Usman Khawaja’s availability for Australia’s second Ashes Test has been questioned following a difficult session just days out from the first ball.
Closely monitored by medicos during a net session at the Gabba on Monday afternoon, the 38-year-old appeared under duress as he continues to battle a lower back concern.

As per cricket.com.au, Khawaja reportedly grimaced several times over the session, particularly when taking on rather expansive shots. Under the eyes of coach Andrew McDonald, captain Steve Smith and selector George Bailey, the team convened in discussion following the session.
Battling back spasms throughout the first Test in Perth, Khawaja was forced to enter at number four after spending too much time off the field during England’s first innings, before being ruled out of the second innings due to continued stress.
The report comes amid talks surrounding Khawaja’s place within the Test side. Travis Head’s remarkable century within the opening Ashes Test is likely to keep the South Australian at the top of the order alongside Jake Weatherald, raising question marks over the future of Khawaja within the setup.
With two full days of practice remaining before the first ball at the Gabba this Thursday, Khawaja will remain under close watch to determine the Australian top order ahead of the pink-ball Test.
