Hero Kiwi sailor Peter Burling will be at the next America's Cup after all, with Luna Rossa.
The three-time winning skipper announced late on Friday afternoon that he has signed to be on the Luna Rossa team for the 38th battle for the most famous sporting trophy in the world.
"I’m excited to announce I’ll be joining Luna Rossa for the 38th America’s Cup challenge,” Burling confirmed in a statement.
“Throughout my career, I’ve always loved racing against Luna Rossa, and now to join this iconic team is a real honour. I am grateful to Luna Rossa for the warm welcome and I’m looking forward to working alongside a world-class group of people.
“This next chapter allows me to keep pushing my performance at the top of the sport, while continuing my leadership role with Black Foils, the New Zealand SailGP Team, and supporting the important work of Live Ocean.”
It is yet to be seen whether Burling will be on the Luna Rossa boat itself given the eligibility rules that have been in place in recent times after the notorious years where Team New Zealand's greatest sailors defected one by one to other teams.
