Richie Mo’unga is unlikely to feature in the All Blacks’ opening Northern Series Test against Scotland, but coach Dave Rennie says the first five is a good chance to return against Wales.
Mo’unga has been included in the touring squad as he continues to build his fitness. Rennie said the All Blacks had taken him to Sydney so medical staff could work with him, and he had trained well in recent days.
“Richie won't be available for Scotland. He's a good chance for Wales,” Rennie said.
Damian McKenzie is likely to start at first five against Scotland, with Rennie impressed by his recent performances alongside Beauden Barrett.
“Yeah, he's been excellent, hasn't he? And that's the luxury we have, you lose a couple and then you have someone of that quality coming in,” Rennie said.
“The plan is Damian is likely to be there against Scotland, and then we'll reassess.
"I just like him on the field."

The squad also gives the All Blacks options across several positions.
Tupou Vaa’i can cover lock and loose forward, while Leicester Fainga’anuku offers flexibility in the midfield and on the wing, as well as a loose forward, where he was named.
Fainga’anuku has had limited game time after returning from injury and suffering a concussion, but Rennie expects him to feature during the tour.
Kyren Taumoefolau’s name also came up in selection discussions.
Rennie said the winger’s try-scoring and Super Rugby form had impressed, but defence remains an area to work on.
“He came up in discussions, obviously scored a lot of tries, had a good Super (Rugby) season as well.
"I think he's got a few areas to focus on, especially defensively,” Rennie said.
“His job will be to have a really big super season next year.”

Ardie Savea will remain at home to recover. Rennie said the All Blacks captain had endured a demanding couple of years and would use the time to be with family before returning to play.
“Make the most of a little bit of time with family and ready to rip in in February,” Rennie said.
Codie Taylor will lead the team in Savea’s absence, with Rennie backing the hooker and the wider leadership group.
The coach said the All Blacks would approach the tour one Test at a time, with the immediate focus on improving their performances.
“This is just about us getting better,” Rennie said.
Rennie also wants the All Blacks to balance their high-tempo attacking game with smart kicking, a strong set piece and the ability to adapt when matches change.
“When you can play at a high tempo, get lightning quick ball like we can, we're going to play,” he said. “You got to play smart, you got to get balance.”
