North Melbourne breaks 72-year record with a clinical win
North Melbourne has officially entered uncharted territory in the AFL world, having broken the record for the longest winning streak in V/AFL and AFLW history.
The Kangaroos notched up their 24th straight win with a dominant second half against Hawthorn, who are 2nd on the ladder by 49 points, which saw them surpass Geelong’s 23-game winning streak between 1952-53.
This is now the latest achievement that the reigning premiers have claimed as they also became the first side since the Crows in 2021 and 2022 (Season 6) to have won back-to-back minor premierships.
Speaking post-game about the historic achievement, coach Darren Crocker noted that he did make a point of expressing his gratitude towards the players following the win.
But now their attention will turn to their finals campaign, where they’ll look to become the first back-to-back premiers in the competition’s history.
“I spoke to the whole program (and) the players about how proud I am of what we’ve been able to achieve,” Crocker said post-game.
“Not just this year but over the last 24 months. It’s been pretty special.
“Now that’s all done, we finish in pole position and a new season starts.
Kangaroos’ captain Jas Garner, who was playing in her 100th match, also gave some insight into how her side has been so dominant over the last three years, believing it related to their connection as a group.
“I think over the last two, three years, it’s the connection we have,” she explained.
“Everyone is so close, we all trust each other; It’s off the field but also on the field.
“We have instinct, we just know where we are going to be on the field.
“We all love playing for each other and for the coaches as well.”
The Kangaroos will now enter their seventh straight finals series as the considerable favourites to make it two in a row.
They’ll either play the Brisbane Lions or Melbourne, depending on their results over the weekend.
