Tom Morris’ trade update on Reid, Curnow, Windhager & more
It’s trade time!
Trade season is just around the corner with 10 clubs now done for the season (Essendon to finish on Wednesday).
SEN’s Tom Morris has provided an update on six players as the footy industry prepares for player movement season.

Marcus Windhager (St Kilda)
North Melbourne showing interest
“Windhager wants to stay,” Morris said on SEN Breakfast.
“St Kilda’s offer is not yet four years, but if it gets to four years today he would sign today.
“He just needs that security.”
Kane Cornes said: “He’s a must have, you need these players. Good performer and consistent. An age demographic that suits the Saints but never going to be an A-grader.
“What do you pay him? This is what St Kilda are clearly weighing up. We can’t overpay for a player who has limitations in his game.”
Morris added: “St Kilda and Lyon has a philosophy, you have your stars that you pay, future stars you pay to keep and then you’ve got your soldiers.
“This is about tenure. North has offered five years for Windhager. They want someone in that age bracket – a bit older than Harry Sheezel. North need the older guys, they have the younger guys.
“They need to bring someone in to get better.”
Tom De Koning (Carlton) & Rowan Marshall (St Kilda)
De Koning set to join St Kilda, Marshall on Geelong's radar
“So TDK comes in on $1.8 million over eight years as a free agent. He will tell the Blues he’s going as a free agent," Morris said.
“It means there’s a decision for Rowan Marshall even before St Kilda decides what they want to do. He can go to the club and say, ‘I want out’, then St Kilda has a call to make, or he can say, ‘I’m happy here’, because he is happy there, the club respects him, he’s clearly a good player.
“How much is a player willing to kick and scream to get out like Christian Petracca last year? As soon as you put your head above water you open yourself up if you don’t get out.
“The Saints are adamant they’re not (considering a trade). It would have to be an unbelievable deal from the Cats to get Rowan Marshall out.”
Cornes added: “If I’m the Giants I’m offering a pretty good contract to Rowan Marshall to get him there.”
Charlie Curnow (Carlton)
On Gold Coast, Sydney and Geelong rumours
“Charlie Curnow is the one I’m really interested in.
“This has the potential to be the biggest story in footy. He was telling people months ago that he would like to leave and play for the Gold Coast Suns.
“He was doing it in a way that it wasn’t necessarily formal. Everyone from the club is saying, ‘Charlie, we’re not trading you, stop thinking about this’. He also would have realised the Suns can’t get it done, Ben King is staying, they won’t use the picks on him and don’t have the cap space.
“The Gold Coast idea is gone for the moment.
“You look around and see Sydney and Geelong as the other two clubs attractive to Curnow.
“The conversation keeps going despite the fact that Curnow himself says he will be at Carlton next year.
“We get caught up in what players say publicly and what players say privately. Dan Houston was Exhibit A, and Tom Barrass was Exhibit B.
“You can’t always trust exactly what the players say and he’s contracted for a long time. I suspect Curnow walks into his exit meeting and speaks about his future. To what degree he wants to get out remains to be seen and to what degree he’s willing to kick the door down remains to be seen.
“Carlton’s answer will be no unless we can get Errol Gulden or Isaac Heeney - something ridiculous.”
Harley Reid (West Coast)
On his contract talks
“He had his exit meeting on Friday and there was nothing out of that meeting that I’m aware of.
“This will continue to tick as clubs in Melbourne wait on a decision from Harley Reid as to whether he wants to seek a trade or stay.
“Everyone I speak to at West Coast is saying he is so invested in the back half of the year, compared to the first six or seven weeks. The difference has been stark.
“But this doesn’t mean that he’s not going to want to move, so this is still one to watch.
“I still believe that if he leaves West Coast or seeks a trade that Hawthorn is the club where he’ll want to go.
“It could definitely be this year because he’s worth more this year than in 12 months’ time.”
Sam Draper (Essendon)
Adelaide and Brisbane are keen on the Bomber
“Draper had his exit meeting yesterday (Monday).
“Essendon’s offer is now five years, the Brisbane Lions and Adelaide still believe they’re in it.
“We’re just waiting to hear what he wants to do.”
Zane Duursma (North Melbourne)
“Hasn’t been a first-choice player. He’s disgruntled because he wants to play.
“I can’t see a world where he gets out but there’s lots of noise around Duursma and if he doesn’t play next year what he’s worth in a trade.
“He is one to watch. I can’t see how it happens because a club is going to have give up a top 10 pick and he’s probably not worth that.
“But he’s frustrated that he hasn’t been playing.”
