Gerard Whateley and Sam Edmund have pondered on the decision that St Kilda’s Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera will have to make at the end of the season and what it means for Saints supporters.
The 22-year-old, through his form this year, has become the most sought-after player in the trade space.
In the space of a year, he has taken the next step in his game, having improved in most key metrics, becoming St Kilda’s most important player.
Friday night’s match against the Bombers was no different as he managed 24 disposals, 577 metres gained, five inside 50s and a goal to help the Saints eke out a two-point win at Marvel Stadium.
With his contract with St Kilda finishing at the end of the year, this has led clubs to enquire about his services for 2026 and beyond with offers.
The main interest has come from the Crows and Power, with Wanganeen-Milera originating from South Australia.
And as the speculation of his contract continues on, Whateley believes that regardless of what St Kilda’s No.7 decides to do during the off-season, it will have a significant impact on the AFL world especially for St Kilda.
“If he knows he’s going, he has played it absolutely masterfully, by creating the illusion that he hasn’t decided what he is doing while playing soaring football,” he declared on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“If he’s not leaving, then he’s torturing a fan base like we have never seen.
“But they will forgive him the moment he declares he is staying.”
Edmund would be in agreement, wondering if there was anyone who had handled a contract situation better than him.
“I’m not sure anyone has handled a contract year better than this guy, regardless of what he does,” he added.
“He has enhanced his value by close to a million dollars. The opening offer for Nasiah, admittedly late last year, was somewhere in the vicinity of $750,000.
“There’s another figure in front of that now.”
While the conversation around his contract continues to pick up steam, Wanganeen-Milera has told the media that he is remaining steadfast in his focus on the remainder of St Kilda's season.
"Obviously, it's a decision, everybody knows about it ... I've spoken to my manager and family as well, they're included in my decision," Wanganeen-Milera said post-game to Channel Seven.
"I'm just focused on finishing the season off and giving my all to this football club, giving my all, playing week-in, week-out."
St Kilda has only one more match for the season. That will be against the GWS Giants at Engie Stadium next Sunday afternoon (AEST).
