Unpacking Sydney’s Curnow interest with a hypothetical
It has become apparent that the Sydney Swans are intent on luring Carlton’s Charlie Curnow this trade period.
A report in the Herald Sun suggests that the Swans are showing considerable interest in the star Blues forward who remains contracted until the end of 2029.
Curnow, 28, was recently linked to the Gold Coast Suns and although the Swans have also previously been mentioned alongside his name, he remains firmly in their sights.
Furthermore, SEN’s Sam Edmund reported on the weekend that Curnow’s name “will not go away in the trade space”.
But it appears highly unlikely that Carlton would contemplate a potential trade for the two-time Coleman Medallist.
With all of this in mind, Garry Lyon and Tim Watson discussed if there would be any chance that this will even happen.

“The short answer is I’ve got no idea, but 100 per cent I would suggest that the questions are going to be asked,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.
“Charlie himself has said ‘I’m playing at Carlton, so there you go’, when the story first broke that he was interested in going north to the Gold Coast Suns.
“We’ve heard that before from many players. Dan Houston said, ‘I’m not going anywhere, all I want to do is play with Port Adelaide’. Of course he’s played the year out with Collingwood.
“Skepticism is our starting point at this time of the year. I don’t believe anything that anyone says, so I wouldn’t rule that out.”
Watson added: “This is straight out of the Sydney Swans playbook - Tony Lockett, Barry Hall, Buddy Franklin…”
Lyon continued: “A big market that likes a sexy name and Charlie has been a two-time Coleman Medallist and at his peak as was high-profile as anyone.”
The discussion moved to a hypothetical about what sort of deal would go anywhere to appeasing the Blues, if of course they had any interest in listening.
A few current Swans players were floated as names that might be in the mix.
Watson: “Let’s play hypothetical then.
“Say this is true and Carlton are open to the possibility, what sort of a deal do you think Carlton will have to be satisfied with before they might even consider allowing Charlie out of his contract?”
Lyon: “We’re all care and no responsibility. They would need first-round picks and they would need players that can kick and run.
“I know Ollie Florent’s name has been mentioned.”
Watson: “They don’t want Ollie Florent. No disrespect to Ollie but he’s not taking them to where they want to be.
“If I’m Carlton I’m saying no.”
Lyon: “Who do you want then?”
Watson: “I’m probably wanting, as a pure player swap, Braeden Campbell and more.”
Lyon: “That’s the type, and picks though.
“Campbell is an in and out (player) who has only established himself this year. Charlie Curnow is a two-time Coleman Medallist.”
Watson: “100 per cent. I’m not saying a straight swap, I’m saying I want that type of player and quite a bit more too.
“Campbell is a really good kick and he would help Carlton in areas they need help.”
