Why Mihocek couldn’t say no to Melbourne offer

Brody Mihocek has explained why he accepted a two-year deal to move to Melbourne.
Despite being a free agent, the 32-year-old was dealt to the club in a pick swap trade, which saw pick 61 and a 2026 third-round pick head back to the Magpies, so not to dilute the Charlie Spargo compensation pick.
While the premiership forward saw himself finishing his career at the Magpies, the club he played 159 games for, the offer from the Demons was too good to turn down.
Now with a new challenge on the horizon, Mihocek is excited to explore new things with his footy.
“I never would have thought that at 32 that I'd be getting another opportunity to explore new things,” Mihocek told Trade Radio.
“It's exciting, and change is very hard sometimes. But I know it's the right move for me and I've already had a lot of support and people reach out from the Dees, and they've made me feel welcome already.
“I can't wait to get started, and it's good that it's all gone through.
“Towards the end of the season, I still hadn't made up my mind, but I had to make a big call at the end, and even after exit meetings, it still wasn't set in stone, but I had to make the right call for myself, and this fresh start I think is going to be a good thing.”
Mihocek inked a two-year deal with the Demons, and part of accepting that offer was to extend his AFL career for as long as he can.
“I want to play for as long as I can in the AFL or at the highest level I can,” Mihocek said.
“I think I needed to get that two-year deal and give it the best two years I have.
“I'm excited to see what my body's capable of at an older age and getting to meet new people.”
One player that Mihocek is keen on playing with is Dees skipper Max Gawn.
Having chatted to Gawn before making the move, Mihocek expects to walk into a Melbourne that’s fresh on the back of several trade moves and a coaching change with Steven King taking the reins.
“It’s really exciting to start fresh somewhere else and see what I can achieve eight years into my career.
“There's a lot of change going on at Melbourne, and I think it's going to be a new and exciting time for everyone involved.
“I caught up with him (Gawn) and asked him what he wanted out of me and what he's excited for in the short term.
“He said it's going to be like a new club and you're coming in with some new, fresh faces as well. Hopefully, I can help him out there as well, and he can get even better.”
