AFL requests further transparency in injury reporting
THE AFL has told clubs to be more transparent with injury updates amid accusations some are being deliberately vague with timelines.
The league today wrote to the media departments of all 18 teams on a variety of subjects. But it made particular mention of injury reports.
“Clubs are reminded that as part of the Media and Broadcast guidelines, injury updates need to provide fans and media with a clear understanding of injury return timeframes,” the email read.
“Recently we have had feedback from multiple stakeholders that some injury updates are not providing adequate timeframes or information.
“Please work with your football departments to ensure that injury updates are providing clear information.”
The AFL last year vowed to crack down on deliberately vague injury updates, banning the use of “short term”, “medium term” and “long term” – language frequently used by Geelong.
The Cats last week had seven players listed as “TBC” on its injury list, with only one player (Jack Henry) given a timeline.
But tonight four players were given timelines.
Geelong coach Chris Scott last week claimed he didn’t know his club released a weekly injury list.
Scott has previously said he won’t be changing his club’s selection process, with the Cats making late changes in five of its eight games this season.
Clubs were today also reminded that they needed to properly communicate late changes on game days, even if it is as simple as a post on X.
