Annoyed Collingwood great storms out of best and fairest night
Collingwood legend Peter Daicos reportedly “stormed out” of the club’s best and fairest event on Saturday night.
Tom Morris, who was present at Crown Palladium, says the father of Nick and Josh left early on the night.
Morris revealed it occurred not too long after Magpies coach Craig McRae made a joke about Nick’s second-place finish in the Brownlow Medal which was won by Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell.
While the specific reason can’t be confirmed, it has become apparent that Daicos was indeed annoyed and angry.
“I was really interested being at the Collingwood best and fairest listening to Craig McRae’s speech. I thought by and large he spoke well,” Morris said on AFL Trade Radio.
“Collingwood know how to do a best and fairest, it was great to get the invite.
“Craig McRae had a little jab at some of the Brownlow votes.”
McRae said on the night: “Congratulations to Nick Daicos who is now a three-time All-Australian at the age of 22.
“He came runner-up in the Brownlow Medal again. Maybe a few more 16-disposal games might get you there next year.
“That’s cheeky Fly coming out.”

Morris continued, wondering if word got to Pies great Peter that his youngest son would end up finishing second in the Copeland Trophy to ruckman Darcy Cameron.
“It got an interesting reaction,” Morris added.
“I’ve been trying to catch Peter Daicos all weekend. He was in the room at the time.
“I tried to call him Saturday, I tried to call him Sunday, I’ve texted him this morning. No response, which is fine, that’s totally up to him.
“But he stormed out at about that time. He took his tie off and he left the function. It was earlier on in the night (not when Nick was announced to have come second in the best and fairest).
“Was it that comment? Was it something else that happened? Did he find out that Nick Daicos wasn’t going to win? Or was he not feeling well? I don’t know.
“But he stormed out. He took his tie off and he went home.”
James Hird and Morris discussed what might have happened with the Essendon legend adamant Daicos is Collingwood’s best player.
Hird: “Best and fairest aren’t what it’s all about.
“What it’s all about is winning a premiership and being part of a successful team. Nick Daicos was their best player this year and there’s something wrong if he didn’t win the best and fairest.”
Morris: “Nick Daicos clearly is their best player, but I find it interesting that Peter Daicos can leave the best and fairest…”
Hird: “You’re putting two and two together and saying he left because he found out Nick didn’t get the best and fairest?”
Morris: “Just like I put two and two together on Thursday last week around Daniel Giansiracusa not being at the best and fairest and there being some issues with Essendon.
“Then we find out later in the day that he’s joined the Hawks.
“So, I’m intrigued by that. Entirely incumbent on Peter Daicos not to speak to me, that’s fine. I do know him a little bit but he hasn’t returned my call.
“But why else would he leave at that moment in the best and fairest aside from Craig McRae’s comment? That’s a really big coincidence.”
Hird: “I have no idea why he left so I’m not even going to speculate.
“But it does seem that coming second is unfair to Nick Daicos. As good as Darcy’s year was I just think he (Daicos) was a better player.”
