Giants coach strong on new deals for linked pair
GWS coach Adam Kingsley is confident captain Toby Greene will soon re-sign with the club.
There has been some chatter around Greene in recent weeks with Kane Cornes suggesting he should return to his hometown of Melbourne for a final tilt at a premiership.
Hawthorn was the club floated which led to a reaction from Hawks coach Sam Mitchell who when pressed on then matter admitted it would be “nice” to have a player of Greene’s ilk in brown and gold.
But in the eyes of Kingsley, the 33-year-old Giants games record holder is set to stay in orange and charcoal for at least a 16th season.
He says talks are in a good spot with both Greene and key forward Jesse Hogan who is also out of contract this year and has reportedly attracted some interest.
“I think they’re progressing quite well,” Kingsley said firmly on SEN’s Fireball.
“I’m not really digging too deeply with Toby into his contract. He’s managing a few different things body-wise with some knocks.
“He’s doing a wonderful job for us continually getting out there. He’s playing a different role, more midfield this year than what he ever has since early in his career.
“I think that’s going to be quite strong, I think we’re close to signing a few people. Jesse is the other one that we’re really strong on. The quicker we can get them done the better for us obviously.
“I don’t think they’d be too far away.”
So, it’s very unlikely that Greene won’t be a Giant in 2027?
“In my opinion, yes,” Kingsley said.
Greene recently passed Callan Ward’s GWS games record and will suit up for his 270th game against Essendon on Saturday.
He also has Jeremy Cameron’s Giants goals tally in his sights with his 422 just five short of equalling the club record.
As for Hogan, he will miss this weekend's clash with the Bombers due to a hip injury.
