“Unstoppable, frightening”: The huge storyline to follow in 2026
Sam Darcy has the scope to become the best player in the AFL within the next 12 months.
That is the opinion of Kane Cornes who reckons the Western Bulldogs young gun has “frightening” footy ability.
Darcy recently kicked eight goals in a Bulldogs intra-club match which only stirred up the hype for a team who Cornes believes will win the flag in 2026.
“I do have a lot of time for the Western Bulldogs and their list,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.
“I think one of the storylines this year his clearly going to be Sam Darcy, provided his body stays sound.
“This guy is going to be unstoppable. The amount of free kicks that he is going to win because he has actually learnt how to contort his body and almost suck the umpire in to giving a free kick away. Not to say they’re not there because you can’t chop the arms or put your arm around the waist.

“I’m just not sure how he’s going to be stopped. If you’re looking at top 50 lists, if he’s not number one as the best player in the competition then something’s wrong.
“I’m telling you this time next year he will be (number one). It’s going to be frightening. One of the huge storylines is going to be the emergence of something we’ve never seen before and that is Sam Darcy.
“The Western Bulldogs have got him and they’ve got him with an absolutely stacked midfield that will be feeding him.”
Darcy booted 48 goals from 17 games last year to take his career tally to 89 majors from 45 outings in the red, white and blue.
He will suit up for Victoria against Western Australia in the AFL’s Origin match in Perth on February 14.
