Chris Fagan and the Brisbane Lions are not expecting great news when it comes to finding out the severity of Lachie Neale’s calf injury, believing that his season may be over.
Coming into the match, the dual Brownlow Medallist was brought back into the side for the first time in a month following an injury to his quad.
Neale, despite having some injury concerns coming into the game, would play an exceptional game, managing 32 disposals and nine marks.
But halfway through the fourth quarter, the midfielder was caught on his haunches with medical staff helping Neale off the ground.
Speaking in the post-game press conference, Fagan noted that it was pretty rare for Neale to come off, which gives some indication of the severity of the injury.
“He is a pretty tough sort of guy,” Fagan said.
“He can usually play through those, but he couldn’t, so I’m not expecting great news there.”
The premiership coach was then probed further about how long Neale might be out, but was unable to confirm any timelines before getting his scan results.
“I don’t know the severity because you need to get a scan to find that out, but as I said, he’s a pretty tough guy; it takes a lot for him to come off, so I suspect it’s something significant.”
And on Fox Footy, Jon Ralph reported that with this calf injury, it is likely that his season is over.
“The expectation is it’s probably three to four weeks, and that probably means his season is done,” he reported.
“You’d imagine unless something extraordinary happens, his season is over.”
Brisbane will play the winner of the Fremantle vs Gold Coast match taking place on Saturday night.
The Semi-Final will be played at the Gabba on September 13 at 7:35pm AEST.
The winner will take on Collingwood in the Preliminary Final at the MCG.
