Son of ex-Saint now ready for AFL chance
Jackson Voss has put the writing on the wall with his VFL form in recent years.
The son of former St Kilda and Brisbane defender Brett, and nephew of current Carlton coach and Lions champion Michael, is a legitimate prospect ahead of the AFL Draft this Wednesday and Thursday.
Voss, 24, has been taking his game to new levels with the Frankston Dolphins over the course of the last few seasons, particularly in 2025 when he was named in the 40-man squad for the VFL Team of the Year.
After averaging 26 disposals last season primarily as a half-back, Voss has attracted interest from some AFL clubs as he looks to follow in the footsteps of his old man who played 170 games for the Lions (35) and Saints (135) between 1997 and 2007.

“I’ve had some interest,” the classy left-footer said on SEN’s Sportsday.
“Someone like me, you’ve got to be realistic. As a mature-age we’re not necessarily the priority of the draft obviously.
“If it does fall my way… a lot relies on how the picks go in the draft with the younger boys and Academy picks.
“You don’t know until you know but it’s nice to have interest and have good conversations with some clubs. It will be an interesting couple of days.”
Voss was a member of St Kilda’s father-son and NGA academy and played for the Sandringham Dragons as a teenager in 2018 and 2019 but was overlooked in a couple of drafts.
His experience with the Saints - a club he has supported his whole life - and his last five years in the VFL have held him in good stead for this potential opportunity after admitting he previously wasn’t quite ready for the big time.
“That was a great experience as a young boy coming through,” he added.
“I was in the father-son academy for a couple of years and really got a good experience into how an AFL system works.
“It’s tough to gauge when you’re that young how interested teams are in you. I’m not sure if I was particularly at that AFL stage.
“I was looking around and had people left, right and centre in the same team at the Dragons who were stars, absolutely dominating off half-back like Hugo Ralphsmith and Louis Butler, and a bunch of other boys who were ahead of me.
“That’s just the way it went and I appreciate my experience with the Saints. I loved my time with them and I’ve been a Saints boy my whole life.
“It was tough that it didn’t happen (getting drafted) but you’ve just got to keep your head up and I’ve really loved my years since then.”
Voss was a key figure in Frankston’s rise to a VFL Preliminary Final appearance last season which will no doubt have sparked the interest of AFL recruiters.
Werribee’s surge in recent seasons has seen the likes of Shaun Mannagh, Riley Bice, Sam Clohesy and Aidan Johnson, among others, drafted by AFL clubs.
The Dolphins gun hopes the precedent set by the Tigers will act as a catalyst for a burgeoning Frankston group.
“You look at teams like Werribee who went through a couple of really good years of success and they’ve had people getting drafted out the wazoo,” Voss said further.
“So definitely being a part of a really good system we’ve built over the last couple of years has helped me be comfortable and really put myself in good standards to make me a better player.
“It gets to those bigger games. We’ve been getting about 5,000 to each home game and that’s as good as you’re going to get in the VFL.
“If anyone wants to come down and watch those games it would be recruiters. Being in those big-time games gives me a good chance to express myself and show what I can do.”
Voss will find out if that AFL interest is real when the 2025 draft takes place this Wednesday and Thursday, but he won’t shy away from a rookie opportunity or SSP spot if nothing eventuates this week.
“All I need is just a foot in the door and if that’s what it is, an SSP, then I’ll give it everything. At least if it doesn’t work out I can say I gave it a good shot,” he concluded.
“It would mean a lot to me to even get an opportunity like that.”
