Ex-Lion Fletcher wouldn’t trade son’s flags for one of his own

Former Lion Adrian Fletcher never won a premiership across his 231 game AFL career.
The former midfielder played for the Cats, Saints, Bears, Lions and Dockers across his long career, with 107 of them coming in Brisbane.
While most of his career came in Queensland, he never tasted the ultimate success that the Lions did from 2001-2003, having moved to Fremantle in 1998 before retiring in ’01.
Even though he only just missed out on being a part of that famous Brisbane team, Adrian has been able to enjoy premiership success through his son Jaspa, who has now won two flags for the Lions after joining the club as a father-son pick in just 2022.
Speaking after the 2024 decider, Adrian spoke about how he’d rather Jaspa win flags than himself looking back at his career.
“I’d rather enjoy it through my boy than as my own,” Adrian told the Herald Sun after the Grand Final
“I think it’s just special watching your kids blossom in their lives.
“At the end of the day whatever happened was going to happen and I would have supported him. But being a back-to-back premiership player that is pretty special.
“I would have been happy with one but to get two in this modern era, not many teams get to win back-to-back.
“It was a special win. We were probably the underdogs but our boys just held their nerve when the game was on the line.”
Fletcher is also this week’s guest on This is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.
