Story Time: Why Hollywood A-lister attended Michael Voss’ final game

Kevin Costner is one of Hollywood’s most famous actors… Hidden Figures, No way Out, JFK, 13 days and Yellowstone are his most famous productions. I personally love Field of Dreams (a timeless classic).
Anyway, on the morning of Friday May 8, Monique Saban received a call from Costner’s team asking if a VIP could come to the football that night in a corporate box.
The issue was, all the boxes were entirely sold out. They couldn’t even fit in one person, let alone three.
So Mon, who is the Brisbane Lions Head of Commercial Operations and has been at the club for 21 years… (Swanny loved her work), called back and asked for more info on the VIP.
“Yes, it’s for Kevin Costner.”
Well, Mon being the huge Yellowstone fan that she is… simply had to try and make this work.
Luckily, a box opened up by pure chance.
Costner was filming a Comedy Drama called Honeymoon With Harry at Wesley Hospital so wouldn’t arrive until half-time.
Jake Gyllenhaal is in the same film. They are also shooting in the Whitsundays.
Anyway, it was no issue he’d only be there for the 2nd half.
‘Perfect,’ said one Brisbane staffer, ‘that’s when Carlton’s wheels will fall off anyway.’
Costner was driven in through the loading dock. It was the only way at half time with fans everywhere.
Caterers were happy to provide food and soft drink for Costner, who shook the hands of Eric Hipwood and Jarrod Berry one the way into the suite.
Costner watched the game intently. He didn’t take quite as much interest in the goal umpires as Tom Hanks did in Opening Round.
In fact, I’m told he was engrossed in the sport.
“The Blue team looks amazing,” he is believed to have said to nearby people… How little he knew.
He also took a keen interest in the Sherrin. It’s shape, it’s colour, it’s texture...
To avoid the crowd, Costner left just before the final siren.
He decided he was going to come to the Geelong game last Thursday and was even hopeful of participating in ‘kick to kick’ on the oval post-game, but then a schedule change meant he couldn’t attend.
Costner was infatuated with the concept of kick to kick. Just as he loved the concept of 'catch' in baseball.
Tom Doedee was especially keen to meet him, given that Doedee is a renowned amateur movie critic.
And Andrew Dillon was particularly disappointed given his interactions with Tom Hanks 3 months ago.
He took Brisbane scarves and caps with him… And he also liked the desert so much that he doggybagged the cupcakes and shortbread!
Who would have thought someone who is worth $400 million and made $1.3 million per episode of Yellowstone doggybags food!
Anyway, anyone who came across him said he was a ripper. And much like Daniel Radcliffe, Chris Hemsworth and Pat McAfee who have all attended Lions games, Kevin Costner is welcome back whenever he wants!
