Edmund: After Perryman snub, what hope have taggers got?

Following a brilliant tagging effort on Sunday night, Sam Edmund believes that Magpie Harry Perryman deserves far greater plaudits after failing to poll a single coaches vote.
Putting his hand up to tag St Kilda superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Perryman played arguably his best game since joining the Pies in 2025.
Not only did the former Giant collect 22 disposals of his own, but Perryman also held Nasiah to just 19 touches and a goal – his lowest disposal tally since Round 6, 2024.
Ending Nasiah’s streak of 39 straight games with 20 or more disposals, Perryman’s efforts played a crucial role in Collingwood’s 12-point Opening Round victory, earning plaudits from many including SEN’s Kane Cornes.
That said, coach Craig McRae opted against rewarding Perryman with a vote for his performance.
St Kilda v Collingwood Coaches’ Votes
10 - Nick Daicos (COLL)6 - Jack Sinclair (STK)4 - Jordan De Goey (COLL)4 - Josh Daicos (COLL)2 - Scott Pendlebury (COLL)2 - Dan Houston (COLL)2 - Isaac Quaynor (COLL)
With that in mind, Edmund argued that Perryman’s snub is a perfect showing of the lack of credit given to taggers in the modern game.
“Harry Perryman’s forward, back and midfield straight jacket job on Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera was telling on Sunday,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.
“The game’s first $2 million man held to statistically his quietest game since early 2024 even if he did start the game well.
“While Nick Daicos ran around largely on his own – apart from (Hugo) Garcia for little periods – it was a stark difference.
“Craig McRae spoke glowingly about Perryman’s performance after the game, but then the coaches’ votes dropped last night, and he didn’t poll a single vote?
“You might not have expected one from Ross (Lyon), but Fly went with Daicos, who got the perfect 10, and then there was votes for Jordan De Goey, Josh Daicos, Scott Pendlebury, Dan Houston and Isaac Quaynor – they were the Pies to get the votes.
“If the coaches aren’t recognising the job in the game, what hope have taggers got among the rest of us?”
Despite not earning himself a vote, Perryman was certainly applauded by the playing group for his efforts across the night.
“The players did (recognise his game),” added SEN Breakfast co-host Garry Lyon.
“Almost to a man, the players came out and lauded the job that Harry Perryman did.”
Perryman and the Pies take on Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday night in a bid to forge a 2-0 start.
