Champion Data: Shock name enters top three in player ratings

A shock name has entered the top 10 of Champion Data’s official player ratings across the last 20 weeks of football.
While Western Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli isn’t a surprise at No. 1, Champion Data analyst Daniel Hoyne revealed another name in the top three which may raise eyebrows - St Kilda’s Max Hall.
According to the analyst, Hall has ranked higher than any other player except for Bontempelli and another Bulldog Ed Richards over a near full-season period of games.
The 23-year-old, who was selected in the 2024 mid-season draft out of Box Hill, has only played 25 games at the top level, and perhaps his best game yet came in Sunday’s loss to Melbourne where he had four goals to go with 26 disposals.
Hoyne discussed his ascent on the Champion Data rankings with Gerard Healy and Ken Hinkley on SEN Sportsday.
Hoyne: “Over the last 20 weeks of footy, so from the back end of last year to where we are right now, these are our top 10 players in the competition.
“Marcus Bontempelli is 1, Ed Richards is 2, you’ll have to guess number 3… and this is the calibre this guy is in because 4 is Sam Darcy, 5 is Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, then it’s Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, Touk Miller and Jack Sinclair.
“You’ve got the top 10 except for three, so who is the third highest rated player over the last 20 matches of footy?”
Hinkley: “Oh I feel like I need a bit more information. But unarmed, I’m going to go with Christian Petracca, and if not I’ll go Tim Taranto.”
Healy: “I’m going to go with Zac Bailey.”
Hoyne: “It’s not Zac Bailey. It’s Max Hall.
“What he's done for the last 20 weeks to be in that calibre of company… it’s not a two-week or four-week period, it’s a 20-week period.
“Just for a bit of context, the game that he played on the weekend with how he used the footy… only Jeremy Cameron and Nick Daicos have had a better game with how they use the ball than Max Hall over the last three years.
“That's the level of player of this guy that St Kilda has to work with within their program.
“I’m excited to see what he can do for Saints fans moving forward for the rest of the season and beyond.”
