Power would be mad to move Georgiades on-ball

Port Adelaide’s Mitch Georgiades caught the eye of many last week after playing some time in the midfield during the club’s match-simulation training session.
While the 192cm forward clearly has some nice attributes that could be useful in the midfield, Kane Cornes thinks there’s no way he’ll be spending time on-ball during the 2026 season.
Even if Georgiades is an option that new coach Josh Carr would like to throw in at centre bounces, Cornes thinks he shouldn’t be shifted anywhere outside the forward 50 after kicking 58 goals in 2026, enough for fifth in the Coleman Medal.
Cornes urged those thinking Georgiades could be a genuine on-baller to calm down after taking a look at the club’s other forward options.
“Another one that I saw was Mitch Georgiades playing as an on-baller,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.
“This was in an intra-club, and everyone was losing their mind thinking, ‘Oh, Mitch Georgiades is going to play as a genuine on-baller’.
“Well, no, he’s not, because who is going to kick their goals?
“I'm looking at Port Adelaide's 2025 goal kicking list, Georgiades kicked 58 and guess who was next? Willie Rioli, who kicked 27, and he’s not there anymore.
“So if Mitch Georgiades is playing on-ball, who's going to kick your goals?
“Is it Darcy Byrne-Jones with his 19 goals last year? Sam Powell-Pepper coming off an ACL, he kicked 18 and was fourth.
“When it comes to the dumbest thing you've seen or read this pre-season, that would be up there.”
Port Adelaide open their 2026 season with a Round 1 clash against North Melbourne on Sunday March 15.
They’ll hope to improve on last year’s 13th placed finish under new coach Josh Carr.
