Port Adelaide experienced a head coach change at the end of the 2025 season with assistant coach Josh Carr replacing Ken Hinkley as the head coach.
Carr was an assistant at the club from 2011 to 2015, then again from 2023 to 2025. Now acting as the senior coach, Carr and Port Adelaide have brought in numerous new faces to their coaching panel for 2026.
Elite key-forward Mitch Georgiades, who booted 58 goals last season, joined SEN’s The Captain’s Run to discuss the changing of the guard at Alberton.
The 24-year-old admitted that there is a really exciting feeling around the club and a brand new energy to the team!
“It's certainly different, it's really exciting,” Georgiades exclaimed.
“Obviously a lot of new faces with coaching - they bring a lot of different energy and different ways to train, which is really exciting.
“It's been a really fresh start to the 2026 season, so looking forward to seeing where it takes us.”
As Josh Carr already had a stint at the club prior to being head coach, Georgiades revealed that that has helped the relationship building process between senior coach and players immensely.
“It certainly does (help), you don't have to build that relationship with the head coach considering he's already been there for two years now,” revealed Georgiades.
“He's got a lot of great relationships with a lot of players, and it certainly makes that transition with a new coach probably a little bit easier.”
When asked about how the game style will change from Ken Hinkley’s, the key-forward admitted that it will only marginally change.
“I think (it will change) probably marginally,” Georgiades said.
“I think a lot of the teams try to play somewhat similarly, so the same principles apply to most teams.
“There's obviously been some slight changes within the game plan and the way we want to play, but I think predominantly it'll look pretty similar.”
Regarding how he views his own future performances in 2026, the prominent goalkicker revealed that he hasn’t set any expectations on himself in terms of goal numbers but is rather aiming to perform more consistently.
“My role this year is I'm going to try to be as consistent as possible and build on last year,” the key-forward said.
“Each year I try to improve something a little bit more than I did the previous year.
“In terms of expectations of output and numbers, I haven't thought about that too much, more about just being able to play a consistent role and give the team an option up forward.”
Port Adelaide won nine games in 2025, let’s see how many they can win under a new coach in 2026.
