"Stop the stupid behaviour!": Why Hawks pair should apologise over gut punches

Hawthorn has enjoyed a superb start to the 2026 season, however, will face one of their most difficult challenges without two All-Australian calibre players in Round 7.
Taking on the Gold Coast Suns in Launceston, the Hawks have lost both co-captain James Sicily and star Dylan Moore, each suspended for one week over identical incidents during their win over Port Adelaide.
Both Sicily and Moore struck Power defender Logan Evans on separate occasions, orchestrating gut punches well off the ball.
The pair were both offered one-week suspensions, with Hawthorn opting not to appeal.
The gut punch was a feature of the game that new footy boss Greg Swann has come down hard on, determined to rule the unnecessary action out of the game by issuing suspensions rather than fines.
With Swann’s wishes made public, both Sicily and Moore should have been well aware of the sanctions that accommodate such actions, and the Hawks will now pay the price against the Suns.
SEN lead journalist Sam Edmund believes the pair owe the club an apology for the rash decision that has since cost them a week.
“Start apologising to your teammates, James Sicily and Dylan Moore,” Edmund told SEN Sportsday.
“As leaders of that club, those two gut punches were as costly as they were stupid, and as stupid as they were unnecessary.
“I’m sure I missed a fair bit of the build-up, but geez, that is just… what’s happened?”
Former Port Adelaide head coach Ken Hinkley, who coached the punchee Logan Evans, added: “Logan Evans must just have a punchable stomach.
“Last week, we got the dummy bag out – those two belong in the dummy bag.
“I’ve got them in the stop (category) too - stop the stupid behaviour!”
The Hawks will remain without Mabior Chol (hamstring) and Will Day (shoulder) as they continue to recover from individual injuries.
They face the Suns on Anzac Day at 12:30pm.
