"Declined, badly": The forward Jenkins thinks should be dropped
Do the Fremantle Dockers need to make a change within their forward half?
Saturday afternoon started as well as possible for the Dockers, scoring over 50 first quarter points at GMHBA Stadium to get the jump on Geelong, playing brilliant football en route to a comfortable early lead.
However, that lead quickly evaporated, with the experienced Cats clawing back to a 10-point victory after a dominant second half display.
While there were several factors that may have influenced the result, SEN’s Josh Jenkins paid close attention to Fremantle’s forward line, making note of one particular player’s lack of involvement.
With just four disposals, two marks and one goal to his name in 80 per cent game time, Jye Amiss’ start to the 2026 campaign wasn’t quite what he would have hoped for.
And with that in mind, Jenkins believes that the club needs to look at a potential shift ahead of next week.
“One game into 2026, I think Fremantle next week should go with Mason Cox instead of Jye Amiss in that forward line,” Jenkins told SEN Crunch Time.
“I can remember pushing up big time for Amiss to be the Rising Star winner. He kicked 41 goals in his first full season of football.
“Normally, 21, 22, 23-year-olds are progressing in terms of their productivity. Think about other key forwards who are of a similar age – Riley Thilthorpe, and what he’s doing. Sam Darcy, and what he’s doing. Logan Morris and what he’s done.
“Or you only need to look at Josh Treacy beside him, and the improvements that man has made in his game and what he’s able to do as a key forward.
“Amiss’ productivity has declined, badly. 41 goals in that first full season of football. It dipped to 36 in the same amount of games the year after – 36 to 41, it’s not a big drop off, but it is a drop off.
“He only touches the ball seven times per game. That’s just not enough. Look at last year – 24 games, he played more games of footy last year, and kicked 32 goals. Nine fewer than his best season, whilst averaging seven disposals per game.
“It’s just not productive enough. He had eight games last year where he was held without a goal, and goals have been his calling card.
“‘If I can grab onto one thing, it’s the fact that I’ve kicked two goals.’ He didn’t have that last year. Eight times he went goalless, and seven times last year, he touched the ball six times or less.
“Yesterday, he had four disposals. Treacy lobbed one over the top to him where he got his only goal for the game. He is just not doing enough in a team that is ready to win now.
“Fremantle were beaten, but for a lot of that game, they were incredibly impressive. Fremantle are ready to win now, and Mason Cox was there as a travelling emergency.
“I am wholeheartedly of the belief that Mason Cox gives them more in a game of footy than Jye Amiss.”
Selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2021 draft, 22-year-old Amiss still has ample time to develop into his lofty potential.
He and the Dockers take on the Dees a Optus Stadium next Saturday night.
