“Unfathomable”: Collingwood president addresses Daicos links

Collingwood president Barry Carp has admitted he is not concerned about the possibility of Nick Daicos leaving Collingwood regardless of what offer is made by the Tassie Devils to the 23-year-old.
With the Devils entering the AFL in 2028, there is a belief that the competition’s 19th side could be prepared to make an offer to Daicos akin to what the Suns offered Gary Ablett Jnr to leave Geelong in 2010.
The fact Daicos' management group have said they would be “negligent” not to speak to the Devils suggests there is some possibility his head could be turned.
But considering the history that the Daicos surname has had at Collingwood through Nick's dad Peter and brother Josh, Carp is confident he’ll stay with the Pies beyond his current contract.
“I grew up in the Ryder Stand, and I moved to the Sherrin Stand (at Victoria Park). I was literally sitting above the Peter Daicos pocket,” Carp told SEN'sAFL Nation.
“Then we all moved to the Ponsford Stand (at the MCG). The Daicos family at Collingwood is Collingwood royalty, and I would expect that to continue to be the case.”
When pressed further by Gerard Whateley on the matter, Carp remained forthright in his belief.
“I think it is unfathomable,” Carp stated.
“And I think from a members' and fans' perspective, it is unfathomable.”
But as he acknowledged, the club under his helm must continue to innovate to ensure that the program offered by Collingwood remains one of the best in the competition to keep players of Daicos’ quality.
“We need to continue to make sure that we offer a program that is at the cutting edge, that attracts and retains the best players,” he said.
“If we can continue to do that both in terms of the infrastructure, the precinct (and) in terms of the data and AI and all those sorts of things, then we’ll continue to retain and maintain our best players and attract great people to our club.
“As long as we continue to promote that, we’ll be in good shape.”
Daicos remains contracted to the Magpies until 2029.
The three-time All-Australian racked up 41 disposals in his side's 12-point win over St Kilda at the MCG on Sunday night.
