Australian rules great Ron Barassi is today being immortalised at the state’s home of football.
Already honoured with a statue outside Gate 4 at the MCG, now one of Melbourne’s most famous streets, Brunton Avenue, which runs alongside the famous venue, will be changed to Barassi Way.
Barassi played 115 of his 254 VFL games at the MCG, with the name change honouring a legend of the game who also coached at four clubs for more than 500 games.
As a player, Barassi won six premierships with Melbourne, while he coached Carlton to two premierships and North Melbourne to a further two.
One of the 12 Legends in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Barassi is one of Victoria and Melbourne’s most famous figures.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said it was only fitting to rename the street in his honour.
“Ron Barassi was an icon of Victoria and Australian Rules Football, so it’s only fitting to have his name memorialised next to the home of football,” Allan said.
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon also welcomed the news.
“Ron Barassi is a Legend of our game, widely regarded as one of the most important figures across the history of Australian football,” Dillon added.
Barassi passed away aged 87 in 2023. His funeral was held at the MCG.
Crews will work to change road signage over the coming days to display Barassi Way, just in time for Opening Round.
