Dillon cites "journalistic standards" amid Gorringe's media war
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon has weighed in on Daniel Gorringe’s reaction to legacy media after the airing of comments made by Sam Docherty, saying that it fell below media standards.
After Carlton’s Opening Round loss to the Swans, the former AFL player turned content creator aired an expletive-laden voice note from former Carlton teammate and good friend Docherty, which criticised the club.
Docherty was unaware the recording would be used for public consumption on the Dan Does Footy podcast.
After the release of the episode, Gorringe - who has partnered with the AFL and produced content on their platforms since last year - received plenty of backlash from established media members. Docherty was subsequently withdrawn from a pre-match function for Carlton’s Round 1 clash against the Tigers.
On the flip side, Gorringe was also praised by fans who appreciated the honest and unfiltered take.
The ex-Carlton and Suns player said “old man media” had been waiting to go after him.
Chief among those criticising his actions was SEN’s Gerard Whateley, who called Gorringe's behaviour ‘reprehensible’ which then prompted a response from the Dan Does Footy host.
When asked by Kane Cornes about the comments Gorringe made about Whateley and other members of legacy media, Dillion acknowledged that, in his view, it did fall below standards for new and traditional media.
“I haven’t had a word with him directly,” Dillon said on SEN’s Crunch Time. “But as media evolves, I think you’ve got different people talking to different audiences.
“But I think everyone at some stage in this game, I think in the journalistic game, there’s standards that you have to uphold.
“As we all adapt to whether it's new media or whatever you want to call it, I don’t think anyone is above basic journalistic standards as well.”
