Who did the coaches miss in Round 2 of the 2026 AFL season?
Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has assessed which players were overlooked in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.
See who the coaches missed below:
Nick Watson (Hawthorn)
“Nick Watson was the 5th highest rated player on the ground, but he didn't get a vote from the coaches,” Hoyne told SEN’s Sportsday.
“I think he is their best player. I just think every time that he's around the footy you just look and go, ‘Something is going to happen here’.
“18 disposals, he wins four ground balls inside the forward 50, seven score involvements and just had significant moments of impact on the game.”
Tim English (Western Bulldogs)
“Tim English was the fourth highest rated player on the ground but didn't get a vote.
“He’s started the season really, really solidly.
“We had the other ruckman Lachlan McAndrew as the sixth highest rated player as well.”
Mason Wood (St Kilda)
“Mason Wood is an interesting player for me.
“He has these games where he has significant impact playing either as a wing or as a forward.
“He played predominantly wing on the weekend. He was the second-highest rated player on the ground but didn’t get a vote.
“He kicked a huge goal in the last quarter as well.”
Willem Drew (Port Adelaide)
“One of your favourites (Ken Hinkley) and one of the Champion Data’s favourites as well, Willem Drew.
“He was the second-highest rated player on the ground, I can understand that he gets missed when you just look at the stat sheet and you go, ‘Yeah, that’s a pretty good game’.
“But he just had a really even contribution with how he won it, how he used it and his defensive actions.”
