The Richmond philosophy that has pressure mounting on Yze

The Richmond philosophy that has pressure mounting on Yze
Tom Morris and Sam Edmund have assessed the ticking time bomb that could become Adem Yze’s coaching tenure at Richmond.
After a Sunday shutdown at the hands of Melbourne, Yze's tenure has again been questioned with the Tigers falling by 46 points in the wet.
In a post-match press conference, Yze defended his coaching ethos as Richmond took on their sixth consecutive loss and 15th total defeat of the season.
He essentially said the win-loss columns don't really matter at this stage of the rebuild.

“If you start thinking about the win and loss, that’s where we’ll lose our way in the process. We need to play four quarters against really strong teams and that hasn’t happened," Yze said.
"We’ve just got to be consistent in our effort and adherence to the structure and system for longer, so we’ll keep toiling away and if we get that consistency then hopefully the wins will come.
"But the process has got to be the main thing we that we’re thinking of."
Morris and Edmund dissected Richmond's current situation and Yze's standing within it, having overseen just nine wins from 63 matches at the helm of the yellow and black.
“I understand that (Yze's comments), but in the end wins and losses get you. He has won nine games as Richmond coach," Morris said on SEN Breakfast.
"I am interested in the wins and loss motto or philosophy he has - I get that the process is what leads you to wins and losses - but he’s won nine games and he’s lost 54 as Richmond coach.
"The point I have is – how long, not that it’s this year, but if it goes the same into next year - how long can a club absorb that?
“When does he need to start actually winning footy to justify keeping his job?
"Because in the end, the same thing happened with Brad Scott – they had shocking injuries in 2025, they got to this year and the losses got him.”
Edmund says Yze should be given some grace due to the club's horrific injury list over the past two seasons.
“The injuries are the alibi – that’s obvious," Edmund said.
“They’ve just removed their high performance coach (Ben Serpell), that is clear, that is a fact that we cannot dispute. But how long do you get that leave pass for, before we start to question the coaching?
“The have the lowest percentage in the competition this year. Have they improved? That’s the question.
“By the numbers they have. That’s the thing, they have the alibi, but how much are we willing to (wait for improvement)?
“It’s very difficult from the outside looking in isn’t it – as to how to draw up the blame pie.”
Morris said further: “(Yze) said they have (improved) – but it’s hard to improve when all your good young players are injured.
“Let me just say this – if Richmond get to July 1 next year and they are sitting on two wins in 2027; there is no way that this current regime can continue.
“He might well be the right guy, and I’m willing to concede that, absolutely.
“He’s a good football person, tactically at Melbourne he was highly regarded, and at the moment the injuries have really hurt him. But at some stage they’re going to have to have a couple of wins to give themselves a sugar hit.”
Before Edmund added: “I don’t know if Richmond supporters have been spoiled in recent times, but they come for him. When we mention Richmond - the majority of the texts say that it’s not good enough.
“I’m a bit more forgiving than that and maybe the truth is clearly somewhere in between, but its really difficult to assess at the moment. Clearly the losses are mounting to a degree they can’t tolerate.
“They were never in it at the weekend."
Yze, who was appointed Richmond senior coach in 2023, is currently contracted to lead the Tigers until the end of the 2028 season.
The 2-15 Tigers next meet the third-placed Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.
