Two delisted AFL players on Tassie VFL radar

Tasmania’s head of list management, Todd Patterson, says the fledgling club is looking at a pair of delisted AFL players to get the ball rolling on their VFL list.
Versatile former Sydney player Robbie Fox, who was delisted by the Swans last month after 105 games, is on the radar of the Devils.
Patterson says the 32-year-old is fielding AFL interest from GWS but Tassie hopes they can be a fallback plan for the Burnie Dockers product as they prepare to enter the VFL in 2026.
Fox last played AFL for the Swans in the 2024 Grand Final.
The Devils are also interested in recently delisted Essendon forward Jye Menzie as Patterson continues to field calls.
“I’m going to need to buy a new phone charger because I’ve worn this one out. I’m on it flat out at the moment,” Patterson said on SEN Tassie Breakfast.
“Each of those players have their own complications. Robbie is still a chance to get picked up by the Giants, they’re showing some interest.
“He’s got really strong commercial interests outside the game so it’s how we complement that.”
North Hobart product Menzie kicked 36 goals in 47 games for the Bombers after being recruited from SANFL side South Adelaide in the 2022 mid-season draft.
“Someone like Jye, we’ve got a contract in front of him. He’s got to work through that process. He’s one of many (we’re keen on),” said Patterson.
“There’s a little bit to it as well it’s almost first in, first served with these contracts. Only so much can go around.
“So we’re just waiting for the phone to ring and get some good news. I think we’re not far away, the next 7 to 10 days a few things will start to fall in place.
“It’s just that waiting game.”
Patterson says the club has already spoken with some potential marquee signings ahead of their AFL inception in 2028.
But he expects conversations with those high-profile players to really kick off in the middle of next year.
“We’re a reasonable way down the line of communicating with those top-line AFL players who we’ve got interest in,” he said further.
“We met with some managers of some pretty good players yesterday (Thursday).
“There’s a good level of interest now, it’s just starting to build out what the sell is and the right time to do that.
“It’s probably a little bit early to go too hard. We have met with some players, but really those meetings are on request at the moment. Not something we’re chasing.
“We’re not in a position where we’re going to say no to a player about meeting. It will really start to ramp up in May-June next year.”
