Melbourne CEO sets deadline for coaching announcement
New Melbourne CEO Paul Guerra has given some insight about his vision for the club and what the Demons are looking for in their new coach.
The current Chief Executive of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce was appointed to the role back in April, but has effectively started his position despite officially beginning in September.
Already, Guerra will play an important role in shaping the club as he will be on the selection committee to appoint their new coach after Simon Goodwin was sacked earlier in the month.
Speaking on AFL Nation before their six-point loss to Collingwood on Friday night, Guerra would give some of the criteria that he will be looking for from prospective candidates.
“I think a new coach coming in means that there will be more change in there,” he said.
“We want to set this coach up, whoever it is, to be successful over the next decade. There’s no doubt they’ll have a view on the game plan that they want to play, and we want to be able to support that.
“They’ll probably have a view on who they want as some of the assistants as well.
“We’ve got a number of assistants that will carry through, we’ll obviously look to see what the new coach wants to do as well, and we’ll support that coach to make sure that they’re going to be successful.”
Guerra also confirmed that the selection of the coach will be made either before or during Grand Final week to allow them to be active in the trade period.
“We made the decision to give us enough time to get the coach in place before Grand Final week,” he explained.
“That then puts us in a position that as soon as the trade period starts, we’ve got the new coach in who is across where the list is at, across the game style that he wants to play and therefore the players that he might want to shape or bring in or trade out.
“We’ll have that discussion later in the year.
“In terms of the timing, we will be active, and we have been active. I think we’re still in the window to be able to provide an update on where our new coach is going to be and appoint that by Grand Final week.”
