Trade talk: Dees CEO on Petracca request and honest May conversation
Melbourne CEO Paul Guerra has opened up on the club’s decision to let Christian Petracca explore his trade options.
Petracca, 29, is contracted until the end of the 2029 season but last week told the club he would like a fresh start elsewhere.
After trying to move to a powerhouse Victorian club last off-season, Petracca is reportedly open to moving interstate this time around, having spoken to Gold Coast’s Damien Hardwick and met with Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks, where he also had a medical with the Crows.
While Guerra and the club allowed Petracca to look around, he says the Demons won’t trade their gun midfielder unless they get fair compensation in return.
With that in mind, the Dees feel it’s up to the Petracca camp to present a deal that would satisfy them.
“In an ideal world, Christian stays with us, but ultimately, he's called to explore other options. He believes he needs a fresh start,” Guerra said on AFL Trade Radio.
“Our view is, you know, let's see what comes back for that. You know, he's got a four-year contract with the football club.
“So, if we don't get a deal that satisfies us, then Christian will be playing as a Melbourne footballer next year.
“Ultimately, it's up to Christian and his team now to come forward with a deal that would satisfy us.
“It's got to turn our head. At the end of the day, he's a generational player for our club, a premiership player, Norm Smith Medallist, and was second in the best and fairest this year, so it’s going to have to be something pretty good.”

Another star Demon that could be on the move this off-season is Steven May, with Guerra admitting that he’s been told to consider his future.
While the two-time All-Australian is contracted for 2026, May has been told that the club wants to play youth in his position.
“What we said to Steven was an honest conversation,” Guerra said.
“He's got 12 months to run on his contract, and he is a quality backman. So, there’d be a couple of clubs, I would think that are in the premiership window looking at him.
“We said, ‘If you get a two-year or more contract, you should consider it, because you've only got 12 months here and we've got a young group of talent pushing through that we need to play in his role’.
“Whether he's here or not, that'll ultimately depend on whether there's a trade to be done.”
Collingwood is reportedly interested in May, with reports suggesting that the 33-year-old has already met with the Magpies.
