Why delisted Magpie would be a “fantastic” recruit for Freo
Delisted Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox could be set to receive an AFL lifeline from Fremantle, reports The Age.
The Magpies delisted the 2023 premiership player last month following 139 games in the black and white, including their two finals in 2025.
The report suggests that Cox could be brought in as an SSP rookie this pre-season, with the club considering the 34-year-old after losing emerging ruckman Liam Reidy to Carlton during the trade period.
While Cox turns 35 in March, it’s believed that he could land a two-year deal if he joins Fremantle.
In response to the report SEN WA Breakfast duo Tim Gossage and Scott Cummings think that Cox could prove to be a fantastic addition in purple, even if he just plays a bit-part role as backup to Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson.

Gossage: “Mason Cox is on the Freo radar. This is big.”
Cummings: “They love stockpiling ruckman, don't they? Is he coming as a ruckman? He's a forward, too.”
Gossage: “He can do both. He's not going to play many games, but as insurance for Jackson or Darcy, it's a given, isn't it? He's still a good player.”
Cummings: “I think he's absolutely worth a look, but I would have thought West Coast are probably more in line for someone like that, and you get to play more games of footy if you go there.
“Does that mean he has no other offers on the table if he's going to come here to play at Fremantle as a bit player? He’ll be playing at Peel for most of the time.
“I think there's more footy in him than just that bit role and play five or six games.”
Gossage: “Someone may grab him, but Fremantle have certainly indicated that with Liam Reidy gone, they need a third-string ruck.
“It’s not a job for a skinny, scrawny kid that they pick up at pick number 70 in the draft. They need a ready-made ruckman because if Darcy, whose body has failed him at several times, or Luke Jackson, go down, they're going to need someone.”
Cummings: “Perth would be better off for it too… he’ll be fantastic.”
