Inside story: Cox’s “awkward and unique” Collingwood delisting

Mason Cox admits his Collingwood delisting was a bit “awkward”, describing it as a “unique” situation.
The 34-year-old was let go by the Magpies on the weekend after 11 seasons in black and white which yielded 139 AFL games.
Despite coming from a non-footy background in Texas, Cox was able to build a very sound set shot routine over the course of his career.
He credits his premiership coach, Craig McRae, who he worked with in the very early days for helping him tinker his game - and that’s why it was all a bit awkward.
“Craig McRae. I think a lot of people know that he’s had a lot to do in my career,” Cox said on SEN Breakfast when asked who he credits the most.
“It was a bit awkward to get fired by the man but it’s part of the experience I guess.
“But I’ve got to give a lot of credit to him for getting me to where I’m at.”
So, how did ‘Fly’ deliver the news?
Cox provided some insight into the meeting with McRae, list boss Justin Leppitsch and GM of footy Charlie Gardiner, while insisting that he fully understands the nature of the cut-throat business that is the AFL.
“I think the club has tried to fire me three times now so third time’s a charm,” he joked.
“It’s one of those things. Obviously it’s a bit awkward. I’m good friends with Justin Leppitsch also and Charlie Gardiner.
“The process was unique for all of us, I would say, for people who have known each other for a long time. It was obviously disappointing to hear that and see it pan out that way.
“But it’s a business at the end of the day. I think I understand that being American, I’m just used to it from my upbringing.
“It’s tough to hear as per usual, you’d love to somewhat be celebrated on the way out with some other players who are finishing up soon, but that’s just not the case.”
Cox was then quizzed by Kane Cornes regarding any potential interest from other clubs.
The American responded with a very straight bat, but was quick to thank Cornes for his praise earlier in the week, even if he didn’t initially believe his kind words.
“I can’t share how much interest there is,” he added. “There’s a little headline for you, buddy.
“What I will say is this - Kane, you said some kind words the other day and your producer sent it to me. He actually had to send an audio file because he thought I wouldn’t believe that you actually said this things to me.
“I appreciate it, it’s very kind of you. I’m going to keep that, I’m going to save it on my phone, and any time I have a tough day I’m just going to remember that Kane Cornes actually likes you.”
While he has addressed it elsewhere in recent days, Cox is adamant he want to play on at AFL level provided there is a rival club who sees value in him.
“It will pan out over the next week,” said Cox. “I’m definitely interested to continue on with this journey. I still have a lot to give.
“My experiences throughout 11 years of playing I think are still very valuable. I get that Collingwood is an aging list and unfortunately I think I’ve been somewhat of a sacrifice to that but that’s just part of the game.
“Hopefully someone else can see value in me and appreciate me being there.”
Cox’s management has confirmed that there is interest in his services but those clubs will remain unnamed.
