Mason Cox admits his Collingwood delisting was a bit βawkwardβ, describing it as a βuniqueβ situation.
The 34-year-old was let go by the Magpies on the weekend after 11 seasons in black and white which yielded 139 AFL games.
Despite coming from a non-footy background in Texas, Cox was able to build a very sound set shot routine over the course of his career.
He credits his premiership coach, Craig McRae, who he worked with in the very early days for helping him tinker his game - and thatβs why it was all a bit awkward.
βCraig McRae. I think a lot of people know that heβs had a lot to do in my career,β Cox said on SEN Breakfast when asked who he credits the most.
βIt was a bit awkward to get fired by the man but itβs part of the experience I guess.
βBut Iβve got to give a lot of credit to him for getting me to where Iβm at.β
So, how did βFlyβ deliver the news?
Cox provided some insight into the meeting with McRae, list boss Justin Leppitsch and GM of footy Charlie Gardiner, while insisting that he fully understands the nature of the cut-throat business that is the AFL.
βI think the club has tried to fire me three times now so third timeβs a charm,β he joked.
βItβs one of those things. Obviously itβs a bit awkward. Iβm good friends with Justin Leppitsch also and Charlie Gardiner.
βThe process was unique for all of us, I would say, for people who have known each other for a long time. It was obviously disappointing to hear that and see it pan out that way.
βBut itβs a business at the end of the day. I think I understand that being American, Iβm just used to it from my upbringing.
βItβs tough to hear as per usual, youβd love to somewhat be celebrated on the way out with some other players who are finishing up soon, but thatβs just not the case.β
Cox was then quizzed by Kane Cornes regarding any potential interest from other clubs.
The American responded with a very straight bat, but was quick to thank Cornes for his praise earlier in the week, even if he didnβt initially believe his kind words.
βI canβt share how much interest there is,β he added. βThereβs a little headline for you, buddy.
βWhat I will say is this - Kane, you said some kind words the other day and your producer sent it to me. He actually had to send an audio file because he thought I wouldnβt believe that you actually said this things to me.
βI appreciate it, itβs very kind of you. Iβm going to keep that, Iβm going to save it on my phone, and any time I have a tough day Iβm just going to remember that Kane Cornes actually likes you.β
While he has addressed it elsewhere in recent days, Cox is adamant he want to play on at AFL level provided there is a rival club who sees value in him.
βIt will pan out over the next week,β said Cox. βIβm definitely interested to continue on with this journey. I still have a lot to give.
βMy experiences throughout 11 years of playing I think are still very valuable. I get that Collingwood is an aging list and unfortunately I think Iβve been somewhat of a sacrifice to that but thatβs just part of the game.
βHopefully someone else can see value in me and appreciate me being there.β
Coxβs management has confirmed that there is interest in his services but those clubs will remain unnamed.
