Magpie claims maiden club best and fairest award
After finishing as runner-up last year, Darcy Cameron has gone one better to claim his maiden E.W. Copeland Trophy during Collingwood’s best and fairest night on Friday night.
It has been a strong year for the 30-year-old, who following his form this season, has extended with the side for an additional three years to see him through to 2029.
The ruckman has had one of his best seasons to date, having managed to average a career high 17.6 disposals, 4.9 intercept possessions and four clearances, which saw the Magpies return to form and finish in the top four for the third time in the space of four years.
Cameron would also pick up the Darren Millane Memorial Award, which is given to the best clubman.
Nick Daicos, who won last year’s best and fairest, would swap places with Cameron as he finished runner-up.
That would prove to be a slightly awkward moment in the night as coach Craig McRae, in his address, would make a joke about the younger Daicos finishing second in the Brownlow, believing that he needed more 16 disposal games like Matt Rowell to win next time.
“Maybe a few more 16 disposal games might get you there next year,” he said.
In the other awards, Jamie Elliott would be awarded the Best Player in Finals and leading goalkicker, which would see him named in the top five.
Ned Long was named as the recipient of the Gavin Brown Award, which goes to the best defensive pressure player.
Ed Allan received the award for the best young player after managing to play in the AFL side on a more consistent basis, having played 13 games this season.
