How Murphy Reid has become a Rising Star contender
After receiving the AFLPA’s Best Young Player award on Thursday night, Fremantle’s Murphy Reid has reflected upon his season so far and where he sees himself in the future.
Reid was drafted by the Dockers with Pick 17 in last year’s draft and has been a revelation for the men in purple.
After his exceptional debut against Geelong, where he scored four goals in six minutes, he has featured in 23 games for Fremantle as they make their return to finals for the first time since 2022, playing as a small forward.
Across those games, he has managed to average 14 disposals and one goal, which has seen him viewed as one of the favourites for the Rising Star despite having played in the midfield as a junior.
Speaking on SEN WA’s Breakfast, Reid noted how much the support of his coaches helped him to be successful in a position not too familiar to him.
“I’ve just been lucky that I’ve played every game and have been allowed to get that continuity and confidence to play my own game,” Reid explained.
“There was obviously a little bit of learning that half-forward role in the pre-season. Probably for the first couple of weeks, there was a lot of stuff with my role, a lot of defensive stuff that I needed to improve on.
“But the coaches were just continuing to back me in and continuing to help make me learn those little things.
“And the season has gone on, I’ve gotten more confident in my role, so I’m not overthinking it and just playing footy.”
Having been signed until 2029, Reid will serve as a key piece of Fremantle’s list alongside the likes of Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw, Hayden Young and Luke Jackson for years to come.
But Reid’s future with the club may lie outside of his role as a small forward and might return to the midfield.
“As my career progresses, I will probably like to move into the midfield,” he said.
“That will be the plan going forward with the coaching group. But it will probably be more of a mid/forward role.
“I mean that will come when it comes. But I’m just happy right now, just learning my craft as a small forward.”
Reid and Fremantle will be using the next week to get ready for their elimination final clash against the Gold Coast Suns at Optus Stadium.
The match will take place next Saturday night with the first bounce taking place at 7:35pm AEST (5:35pm Perth Time).
