The radical rule change ex-AFL CEO wanted more traction on

Former AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou tried to bring in the ‘Super Goal’ during his time in charge of the competition.
The AFL previously trialled the idea in the pre-season competition from 2003 to 2017, with players rewarded with nine points for goals from outside 50m, instead of the usual six points for a major from any position on the ground.
While Demetriou was successful in bringing in the Super Goal during the pre-season across his 11-year tenure in charge, he could never convince other decision-makers at AFL house to bring it into the competition proper.
Looking at the three-pointer in basketball, Demetriou thinks that the Super Goal could have brought real excitement to the AFL.
The CEO explained his position when asked by SEN’s Sam Edmund: “Was there one rule change historically that you were passionate about and wanted to get through but couldn’t?”“The one rule change I was passionate about was the nine-pointer for goals outside 50m,” Demetriou replied on SEN Breakfast.
“The Super Goal. It happens in basketball with the three-pointer and in netball now.
“Why not? I mean, it would bring back long kicking, contested marks, maybe even the barrel or the big torpedo punt.
“Sometimes I'd exercise my votes. We got it through for the pre-season, but I didn't get much traction.”
Demetriou’s call comes after the AFL introduced a raft of new rule changes ahead of the 2026 season.
