Trade Talk: Eagles closing in on Reid re-signing
Harley Reid has instructed his management to only speak with West Coast as they continue to negotiate a contract, according to Sam Edmund.
Having been drafted by the Eagles with the No. 1 pick back in 2023, Reid is viewed as a key cornerstone of their list as they continue to build their club after a disappointing couple of seasons.
According to the latest reports out, it appears that the Eagles are the most likely to grab his signature, with the main question surrounding his contract length.
Currently, Reid has been said to prefer signing a two-year deal with a trigger that would extend for an additional nine years.
While West Coast officials would prefer to offer a two-year deal with the option for a nine-year extension.
But Edmund has been told that discussions between the two parties have been in the right direction.
“I think it is moving in a direction that’s positive for West Coast for the last several weeks,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“He has instructed his management to deal with just West Coast at the moment.
“They’re in the cut and thrust of the deal at the moment. Whether it be two (years), four (years) or who knows.”
Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson believes that the club should try to make the announcement as soon as possible, noting that it won’t be much of a priority when the season ends.
“You just want to get it done so there’s a little bit of positivity,” Simpson stated.
“Ideally, it’s done this week, so there’s some springboard (and) enthusiasm to the next season.
“Because all of a sudden, when you’re not playing, it’s not really a big issue, it's not going to be the fanfare that Wanganeen-Milera has got.
“But the length of contract, that’s going to be interesting.
West Coast’s last match of the 2025 AFL season is against the Sydney Swans at Optus Stadium. First bounce takes place at 7:35pm AEST (5:35pm Perth time).
