Carlton re-sign out-of-contract defender

Carlton have re-signed out-of-contract defender Mitch McGovern, securing his services for the 2026 season.
31-year-old McGovern was made to wait on a contract extension, as the Blues underwent significant list change over the course of the AFL Trade Period.
Pulled from the side in Round 19 with injury, McGovern failed to make his way back into the senior side despite playing all of the Blues' first 17 games, with reports suggesting the defender finished the season just one game away from triggering an automatic contract extension.
With defender Jack Silvagni exiting for St Kilda and the club unable to secure wantaway Dog Buku Khamis as defensive depth, the Blues have opted to re-sign McGovern on a one-year extension.
“Mitch’s versatility at both ends of the ground, combined with the experience he brings will see him add some flexibility to our side next season,” list manager Nick Austin said.
“He fits seamlessly into our structure and helps strengthen our team across the field in a number of positions.
“We look forward to seeing him back at IKON Park and getting stuck into pre-season training.”
