Why the Dogs shouldn't offer Treloar a new deal
Josh Jenkins has stated that he would not offer Adam Treloar a new contract at the Western Bulldogs for 2026.
With his contract set to expire at the end of this season, Jenkins believes the midfielder should have played his last game for the Bulldogs.
Simply put, Jenkins can't see Treloar playing a role in the Dogs' winning the 2026 flag or not.
“I wouldn’t,” Jenkins said on SEN Sportsday.
“They are not winning a premiership on the back of Treloar being in or out of the team. No chance.”
Jenkins believes letting the 32-year-old head elsewhere will be beneficial for the Bulldogs’ long-term future by giving more opportunities for their young midfield brigade.
“You’ve got to find out about (Ryley) Sanders around the ball. You’ve got to give (Joel) Freijah the opportunity. He’s still playing out on the wing, he’s going to be an inside mid. Treloar just gets in the way," he said.
“My thinking is 80% towards Sanders and Freijah getting more opportunities, and if Treloar’s on your list, you will pick him because he’s a good player.
“But the other 20% is he doesn’t help their issues. He probably makes their issues around the ball worse. He makes their issues worse because he’s a ball watcher, he’s a ball hunter. They’ve got to have way more balance around the footy and that was proven this year.”
Jenkins also believes a move to a fourth club could be on the cards with other clubs likely to monitor Treloar’s situation.
“I would suggest there would be four or five clubs getting straight in line to grab him.”
After a career-best year in 2024 which saw him receive All-Australian honours for the first time, repeated calf injuries have restricted the midfielder to only four AFL games in 2025.
Having recently returned from injury, Treloar has played the last two VFL games for Footscray in a bid to prove his health in a push for a new contract.
After winning their Qualifying Final against Frankston, Footscray will play either Box Hill or Brisbane in a VFL Prelim next week.
