"A sensational signing": Meninga keen on Munster talks
Mal Meninga says it is an absolute no-brainer that if Cameron Munster decides to leave the Melbourne Storm, that he would be making a move to sign him at the Perth Bears.
The Bears are poised to become the 18th NRL team in 2027 and with Meninga at the helm, the lure for big-name players to play under such a revered coach will be strong.
Munster and Meninga have worked together previously and the relationship is one he says will stand him in good stead if he was able to pull off the “sensational signing”.
“It’s obvious that if Cameron becomes available and on the market and we would be having a chat with him,” Meninga said on SENQ.
“If that did occur we will be talking to him.
“That certainly helps, having that relationship. He’s a Queensland captain now, a victorious Queensland captain.
“That’s where he wants to go in his career, he wants to lead football teams.
“If he becomes available then that would be a sensational signing for us, particularly in the leadership.”
Meninga’s comments come after Storm coach Craig Bellamy said he would not stand in Munster’s way should he decide to walk away from the Melbourne franchise.
The 30-year-old is yet to vocalise a desire to leave but with family in other states, the option is not off the table.
“He hasn’t said anything to me,” Bellamy said on Thursday.
“I imagine if he feels that it might be an option, he would come and talk (to the club).
“At the end of the day if it was something he really wanted to do, especially with what he has done for our club, I don’t think we would stand in his way.
“We certainly wouldn’t like to lose him and if there was something we could do to make sure we keep him here, we would do that.
“He obviously has a family and kids now. While his immediate family don’t live in Melbourne, he has made a lot of connections with people in Melbourne.
“It would be a big decision for him to do it. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. Cameron has to do what is best for him.
“(But) we would love to keep him at our club. We will do everything we can.”
Munster is contracted with the Storm until 2027.
