The New York Yankees head home with no margin for error after the Toronto Blue Jays beat them 13-7 in game two of their American League Division Series.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone put on a brave face after his team was held hitless through their first 5.2 innings on Sunday to fall behind 9-0, following a 10-1 hammering in game one.
Toronto's 23 runs in the ALDS are the most by any team in the opening two games of a post-season series. They need one more win to reach the American League Championships Series, with the next step the World Series.
The Yankees' hitters struggled badly in game two against Blue Jays rookie starting pitcher Trey Yesavage, who set a franchise post-season record by striking out 11 in 5.1 no-hit innings.
Toronto's hitters backed him up with five homers - including the first post-season grand slam in team history, thanks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
"Obviously, it feels like the world's caving in around you, you lose two games like that in their building where it doesn't go right," Boone said.
"But all of a sudden you go out there and win a ballgame on Tuesday, the needle can change. There's been a lot of weird things that have happened in baseball this year. This would not be the weirdest, us rallying."
Yesavage was the toast of Toronto after his stunning post-season debut.
"I couldn't imagine a better feeling right now," he said.
Game 3 of the Toronto-New York ALDS series is Wednesday (1pm NZ time).
