Why Alex De Minaur can win the 2025 Australian Open men’s singles title
SEN Tennis expert Candy Reid genuinely believes that Alex De Minaur can win the men’s singles crown at the 2025 Australian Open.
The No. 8 seed has cruised through his first and second-round matchups against Botic van de Zandschulp and Tristan Boyer respectively and next faces No. 31 seed Francisco Cerundolo on Saturday.
While Cerundolo is also seeded, Reid foresees De Minaur getting through the Argentine relatively comfortably before moving onto a fourth-round matchup where he’d also be favoured.
“He’s the 31st seed from Argentina, Francisco Cerundolo, but he’s probably a little bit better on the clay courts (than hard courts),” Reid told SEN Afternoons.
“I expect Alex De Minaur to come through that in three or four sets and I think Alex De Minaur could win this title, honestly, I really do think that, and I think he could get to the semis at the very least.
“If he wins this match, he's going to face either Alex Michelsen or Karen Khachanov (in the fourth round) and I think he’s better than both of those players.”

The main and obvious hurdle towards De Minaur’s quest for a maiden grand slam will no doubt come in the quarter-finals – if he makes it that far – where he’s likely to match up against Jannik Sinner.
“In the quarters he’s due to meet Jannik Sinner, so that's going to be the tough task,” Reid said.
“Alex De Minaur in my opinion, is number one in so many aspects, but Sinner has got the pip, he’s got just got a little bit more pace, he can match De Minaur for speed and he’s got a better serve.
“So, we'll look forward to that one.”
Theoretically, if De Minaur keeps winning and facing his highest possible ranked opponent, his quest to a final would see him play Karen Khachanov (19) in the fourth round, Jannik Sinner (1) in the quarters, Taylor Fritz (4) in the semis and Alexander Zverev (2) in the decider.
