R360 Delayed: What will Zac Lomax do now?
SEN’s Mark Braybrook has questioned Zac Lomax’s next move after R360 was delayed by two seasons.
Lomax was granted a release from the Parramatta Eels with many expecting the NSW and Kangaroos star to join the R360 competition.
Reports have emerged that Lomax’s release from the Eels prohibits an NRL return with any other side, limiting his ways back into the competition.
Peter V’Landys has said the NRL would welcome Lomax back if he chose to return, but Mark Braybrook has doubted Lomax’s motivation and if he would be welcomed back by his Parramatta teamlists.
“From the outside looking in, (Lomax is) a guy that was a fair player at St George Illawarra, playing in the centres,” Braybrook said on SEN 1170 Afternoons.
“Shane Flanagan came in and said, ‘mate, we want you to play in the wing rather than the centre’… he didn't like that. He wanted to play in the centres, but in the end, the coach got his way, and Zac Lomax ended up on the wing.
“He then ends up playing for New South Wales, he then ends up playing for Australia, but he doesn't like that, so he wants to leave the Dragons and go to Parramatta, where Parramatta say to him, ‘mate, we're not gonna play you in the centres, we're gonna play you on the wing’ and he turns into one of the best wingers in the game.

“He's gone from being a first grader to an international player playing on the wing.
“Now, I don't understand how you then get upset with the fact that you find a niche that you may not necessarily like but it's still a pretty good niche, playing on the wing, playing for your state and playing for your country, but you want more.
“He seems to be someone that is always looking for something more further down the road, and maybe with this R360 in the money, that was a huge carrot for him, but I don't know that that would even satisfy him.
“Then we read during the week that he's looking at potentially getting involved in UFC, I mean, where does that come from, what is that about?
“He might be really good at it, I don't know, but why anyone would want to do that begs belief to me.
“But Zac Lomax, I just find it really weird that he's become such a good player on the wing, even though he didn't wanna play on the wing.
“Sometimes you get handed an opportunity that you don't really want or expect and you make the most of it.
“Most people, I think, when given that opportunity and you've made the most of it, your mindset changes.
“You say ‘well hang on a minute, I was really going nowhere as a centre. I'm now playing for Australia on the wing’… but he wants more, and I wonder where he's going to end up.
“Is he gonna be one of these players that ends up nowhere, doing nothing? Throws away what potentially could be a wonderful career because he doesn't really know what he wants.
“Him coming back to the NRL next year, if he does, is a lot harder than Ryan Papenhuyzen ending up playing for a club next year.
“If you're Parramatta and your teammates at the Eels, do you want him back?
“He's got 3 years left on his contract at Parramatta, so he can't play for another NRL club unless Parramatta give him the go-ahead. If Parramatta say no, you can come back and play here, as a teammate, would you be happy?
“Discussions today from Lote Tuqiri, ‘go and play rugby and play in the World Cup in 2027’. Is that really what you want to do Zac?
“I mean, if you're not a rugby person per se, who's to say you're gonna get success there playing rugby.
“Are you in it for the money, or are you in it for the personal satisfaction of being as good as you can possibly be in a particular sport?
“I'm confused as to what is going through Zac Lomax's head, and I just fear that with this delay of R360, there might be a wonderful career cut very short because of mixed messages or some sort of brain fade.”
