Ryan Fox has picked up his first win on the PGA Tour in dramatic finish - defeating Harry Higgs and Mackenzie Hughes in a three-way playoff at the Myrtle Beach Classic.
Fox celebrated as he watched his chip-in birdie drop from the rough just outside the 18th green, putting the pressure on Higgs and Hughes to sink their birdie putts and force another hole.
"Both of those guys had makeable chances, I felt like I had to give it a go. Honestly, 6-8 feet out I thought it was in and I don't really know what to think right now," Fox said on the broadcast after the win was confirmed.
The result came as both Higgs and Hughes failed to birdie on the 18th hole - leaving the 38-year-old Kiwi golfer in disbelief of what had just transpired.
"It's been a tough couple of seasons out here, just got my card last year, I haven't had a great start this year so far.
"I always felt like my game was good enough to compete with the best in the world and I got to show it a little bit today. Hopefully it kick starts things for the rest of the year for me."
That win secures Fox's place at golf's next major, the PGA Championship, to be held May 15-18 (NZ time) at the much-loved Quail Hollow - a three-hour drive from South to North Carolina.
"I played all of them (majors) last year and I was pretty gutted to miss The Masters this year. I knew there was one spot going this week and the only way to get it was to win, so I'm chuffed with that," Fox said.
"I love Quail Hollow as a golf course. It changes the plans a little bit, I might have a bit of a hangover tomorrow driving to Quail, but that's all good, I can live with that."
