The NZ Warriors and St Thomas of Canterbury College have formalised a new partnership aimed at strengthening the club’s development pathways.
The Christchurch school has emerged as a rugby league powerhouse in recent years, becoming the first school outside Auckland to win the NZRL Secondary Schools title in 2023 before defending the crown in 2024.
Several St Thomas players have already progressed through the Warriors system, including Bishop Neal and Jason Salalilo, who both feature for the club’s New South Wales Cup side. Fellow student Kenny Lafituanai was recently named the Warriors’ 2026 Harold Matthews Cup U17 player of the year.
“It’s the first time we’ve had an official partnership with a high school, a tremendous development with mutual benefits for both of us,” said Warriors general manager recruitment, pathways and development Andrew McFadden in a statement.

“St Thomas has quickly established itself as one of the strongest rugby league schools in the country and we’re excited to provide more opportunities for players to chase their dreams with the Warriors.”
St Thomas principal Steve Hart said the school was proud to formalise its relationship with the Auckland-based club.
“This partnership encompasses far more than rugby league; it is about creating pathways, building character, strengthening relationships and providing opportunities for our students to grow as confident young men both on and off the field,” Hart said.
Salalilo has also been included in the Warriors’ 22-man squad for Sunday’s blockbuster clash against Penrith.
