NRLW Warriors and New Zealand rugby league representative Kath Wharton (nee Keremete) has died, aged 41.
The second-row forward was a part of the Kiwi Ferns’ 2008 Women’s Rugby League World Cup-winning squad. She also started in the final of the 2013 tournament against Australia at Headingley.
In 2013, Wharton entered a six-year retirement to focus on a career outside of football and to raise her family.
She came out of retirement in 2019, making three appearances for the Warriors’ NRLW side. She also represented the Māori All Stars.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the passing of NRLW Warrior #28 Kath Wharton," the Warriors posted on social media.
"Beyond her many achievements on the rugby league field, Kath was a genuine, kind and beautiful person with such a big heart for her whānau, rugby league and the people of Northland.
"Our heart goes out to Kath’s husband, their children, friends and whānau during this difficult time."
The cause of death is unknown.
