Voss: What men's NRL can learn from women's
Andrew Voss believes that the men’s NRL has a thing to learn from their female counterparts regarding the speed of the game.
New South Wales put on a dominant display in Game I with a 32-12 win against Queensland at Suncorp Stadium to kick off the Magic Round proceedings.
But during the match, the ability for both sides to play the ball correctly after being tackled caught the eye of Voss, who now wants to see a crackdown in the NRL on the rule.
“Watching last night and once you see it you can’t unsee it,” Voss said humorously on SEN 1170’s Breakfast.
“The girls get their foot to the ball and the play of the ball.
“I sent that out as a very tongue-in-cheek tweet, these girls aren’t coached properly.
“They’re getting their foot to the ball. How hard is it? Well, it’s not hard for them.
“So, once you’ve seen it, you find that you’re watching every single play of the ball, ohh she got her foot to the ball, there’s another one.
“And you know what, it does slow the play. I’m talking a fraction of a second. When all of your focus is that play the ball, you realise that the slightest advantage is taken by not getting your foot to the ball and then do that.
“Now, I’m talking fractions of seconds, but when you multiply that by 60 sets of six and all that, the game moves that fraction faster.
“We have allowed the men to get to where we’re at now and we try and have a crackdown.
“Why don’t we have a crackdown, where it is you actually have to get your foot to the ball.
“None of this, you made a genuine attempt or as long as you make a genuine attempt. No, why don’t we make that rule black and white?
“The girls can do it, the elite women of our game of Rugby League can get their foot to the ball, it is possible.
Co-host Matt Russell was in utter agreement with Voss.
“Because genuine attempt is so subjective isn’t it,” Russell said.
“In the eyes of one man that might be a genuine attempt, in the eyes of another woman, it will be no they didn’t.
“So, make it black and white, must touch (the) ball with foot.”
