Australia captain Ollie Peake made a big statement overnight at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, notching a century in the Super Sixes victory over the West Indies.
Peake’s 109 from 117 balls helped Australia put together their score of 7/314, enough to win the match by 22 runs after the West Indies could only muster 9/292 in their chase.
The victory confirmed Australia’s spot atop Group 1, with the reigning champs now on their way to a Semi-Final.
SEN’s Gerard Whateley thinks Peake’s knock could be the most profound moment in Aussie underage cricket for some time, labelling the Victorian the future for the national team.
“If we are playing the futures market here, what just happened at the Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe might be the most profound moment in Australian underage cricket in a good many years,” Whateley said on SEN Mornings.
“Ollie Peake with a 113-ball century and he finished with 109 batting at No. 4 in a total of 314, and he guided Australia to victory over the West Indies.
“Australia is on to the Semi-Finals, and Ollie Peake is on his way. It’s a landmark day for him.
“Ollie Peake is the future of Australian cricket. We had a little glimpse in the BBL, he hit the six for the Renegades’ win in Perth.
“He’s still a teenager, so how does Australia choose to blood him? The most promising part is that Australia have had him on the radar the whole way through.
“He was part of Australia A squads and teams before he was in Victoria, so they’ve always had an eye towards him.
“He’s now flourishing.”
Peake, 19, has already played 10 first-class games and 7 professional T20s, notching four fifties.
