Turnbull Stakes guide: Who can win and why
The Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) headlines the Flemington card this Saturday with plenty of Australia’s top horses in the $750,000 race.
Mark Hunter has broken down horse by horse which runner can win the Group 1.
See who Hunter is tipping to win the Turnbull below:
Antino
“Antino will probably be my third pick, he’s going fantastic,” Hunter told SENTrack and RSN’s Giddy Up.
“Can he win the race?
“I’m gonna say no because I’m going with two chances.”
Land Legend
“No.”
Sir Delius
“I’m going to say no.”
Via Sistina
“Yes,” Hunter said.
“It is (a difficult gate), he (jockey James McDonald) is going to have, you’d think, Golden Path as your first leader.
“Whether a horse like Half Yours cuts them off and gets down to the fence and forces them one back, then he’s in an awkward spot.
“But (J-Mac) is not a bad rider.”
Moira
“No.”
Half Yours
“Half Yours has been beaten in two benchmark races in its last four runs.
“He’s got 56kg, he’s getting 1kg off Via Sistina.
“Half Yours is absolutely flying and a very good horse, but can it run well in a Caulfield Cup?
“I don’t think he can win this race.”
Aeliana
“Yes.”
Young Werther
“No.”
Adelaide River
“No.”
Golden Path
“Fantastic last time, but no.”
Middle Earth
“No.”
Deakin
“No.”
Zardozi
“No.”
River Of Stars
“No.”
Via Sistina is currently the $2.40 favourite (on Sportsbet) and Sir Delius is the second favourite at $4.80.
Odds correct when published at 10:15am on October 3.
