The two horses James McDonald would want to ride in the Melbourne Cup

Champion jockey James McDonald has named the two horses he would want to ride in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
The superstar rider doesn’t have a ride in the race due to his ‘heavy’ weight but he’s identified a pair of runners that are a live chance in the race that stops the nation.
The 2021 winner of the race believes Sea King and Zardozi are genuine winning chances in the 3200m feature with both runners bringing two completely different formlines to Flemington.
Sea King was last seen blowing away his rivals in his Australian debut in the Bendigo Cup and the Harry Eustace trained galloper has been met with genuine market support.
Hollie Doyle will take the ride from barrier one and he’s currently rated a $14 chance.
“It’s obviously hard,” McDonald told SENTrack.
“That Sea King win in the Bendigo Cup was unbelievable, it was so impressive.”
Continuing his assessment on the race, McDonald conceded it would be a great story to see Zardozi win the race for trainer James Cummings given the Cummings’ connection to the race thanks to his grandfather Bart.
James took a leaf out of Bart’s book with the quick back up out of Derby Day and the 2024 Oaks winner looks primed for Tuesday’s edition of the Cup.
“Also, Zardozi’s Melbourne Cup trial on Saturday was good, I’d love to see James Cummings win it because he’s obviously done it with the unique path with the back up and it worked so well for Zardozi last year with the Oaks and she’s such a good horse,” McDonald added.
“Again, does she run the 3200m? It’s quite interesting but it’s a pretty open race to be fair.”
