Error-laden Wallabies fall short against Argentina
In front of a packed Allianz Stadium, the Wallabies have nearly overcome a 21-point deficit to defeat Argentina in their second Rugby Championship match between the two sides.
The Argentines would just hold on to win 28-26 despite Australia scoring four tries to their one.
Coming into the game, the Wallabies made four changes from their side that beat Los Pumas in Townsville, which included Tane Edmed making his starting debut following Tom Lynagh's hamstring strain and Len Ikitau coming out for Hunter Paisami.
But it was Los Pumas who managed the first score for the day following an offside call, which saw fly-half Santiago Carreras convert a penalty goal.
But the Wallabies were quick to respond, with Joseph Suaalii managing to get past three Argentinian players to score a magnificent try to place his team ahead.
However, that lead would be short-lived with Edmed having a kick smothered by Julian Montoya, which was subsequently chased and scored to see Argentina lead once more.
That would then kick start a run of penalty goals for Los Pumas, with the Wallabies giving away too many errors. And those errors were pounced upon by Carreras, as he didn’t miss, which saw them lead by 21 points with just over 15 minutes to play.
But with Carreras receiving a yellow card for putting his hand out to stop a break, the Wallabies fought their way into the game but fell agonisingly close.
After the game, coach Joe Schmidt felt that Australia had enough moments to win the game and was disappointed by the result.
“We had enough of the game to get the result,” Schmidt said post-game.
“A lot of it was our own errors. Argentina are a really good team, but we ended up making up 11 line breaks to three.
“Scoring four tries to one and we don’t get a result, it’s incredibly frustrating and disappointing at the same time.”
While the Wallabies lost their match, they have actually ended up on top of the Rugby Championship with the All Blacks suffering a horrific 43-10 loss to South Africa.
The Wallabies will complete their Rugby Championship campaign against New Zealand with matches at Optus Stadium in Perth and Eden Park in Auckland.
The first of those games will be played in New Zealand next Saturday, with Australia keen on breaking their 39-year win drought at Eden Park.
